Choosing the Right Lighting for Each Room
How to plan lighting for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms: warm vs cool light, layering, dimmers and what to check before buying fittings.

Quick answer
Good home lighting combines general light, task light and accent light. Use warm white (around 2700 to 3000K) in living areas and bedrooms, neutral white in kitchens and work areas, and fittings rated for moisture in bathrooms. Check the ceiling type and fixing before buying heavy or decorative fittings.
Think in layers
One central ceiling light rarely lights a room well. Most rooms benefit from three layers: general (ambient) light, task light where you work or read, and accent light to highlight features. Each layer on its own switch or dimmer gives you control.
Colour temperature
Keep the colour temperature consistent within a room. Mixing warm and cool light looks uneven.
- Warm white (2700 to 3000K): living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas.
- Neutral white (3500 to 4000K): kitchens, home offices, bathrooms.
- Cool white (5000K+): utility areas and garages.
Room by room
- Living room: dimmable ceiling light plus floor or wall lights for the evening.
- Kitchen: bright, even light over worktops; pendants over an island or counter.
- Bedroom: soft general light and bedside lights you can switch from the bed.
- Bathroom: fittings with the correct IP rating for their zone near water.
Before you buy a fitting
- Check the weight and how it is fixed, as gypsum ceilings may need extra support.
- If you want dimming, make sure the LED fitting and the dimmer are compatible.
- Measure drop heights for pendants (over tables and counters).
- Send a photo of the product to your electrician before purchase if you are unsure.
